They prefer it to the chore of grooming their paws after having touched dirty litter (even if you keep it cleaned). That’s my theory.
Mine don’t even bother doing that much. Their obsessive, worthless “covering” drives us so crazy, we shoo them out of the box if they keep at it. After a while they just didn’t even bother to try. They do their business, inspect the affected area, and jump out to their next task that is across the house. We created bad habits for them, but at least we are sane!
