Boy Bullied for Different Colored Eyes & Cleft Lip Adopts Cat With Same Condition

A 7-year-old boy that was bullied for having two different colored eyes and a cleft lip has found a best friend and soul mate in a shelter cat with the exact same conditions.

According to Madden's mother, Christina Humphreys, Madden was often bullied in school because of his cleft palate and complete heterochromia iridum — a rare condition that causes his eyes to be two different colors. Only one percent of the world’s population is affected.

Humphreys wrote that for a while, the bullying really affected Madden; it seemed to break his spirit. So when she saw a photo of the cat with a cleft lip and heterochromia on a Facebook community group of mothers of children with cleft lip and palate, Humphreys knew immediately that the cat was meant to be a part of their family.

The only issue? The special kitty was at a shelter in Minnesota and Madden and his family lived in Oklahoma. But thanks to a few friends that helped fund a road trip to bring Moon and Madden together, the family was soon on the road to Minnesota!

"We’re usually not spontaneous people," Humphreys writes. "But we knew that we were meant to love this kitty."

Since bringing Moon home, Madden and his special friend have been inseparable.

“It sounds silly, but fate willed these two together. There’s no other explanation,” Christina said. “Everyone needs a friend, and everyone needs to feel understood. I’m so thankful Madden has Moon."

“Funny how a pet can make you feel less alone,” she told blogging site Love What Matters. “Moon helps Madden realize that being born unique is an incredible thing; that he is magic.”

I also have heterochromia, could give Madden tips on dealing with playground bullies from my own childhood where frequent moves meant I was often the new kid… and, although other family members have had “odd-eyed” cats & dogs, it was only as I approached 50 that I stumbled upon a white, middle-aged male cat with different colored eyes!
I am glad Madden did not have to wait another 40 years before meeting his special friend! Lots of love to both of them from me & my friend Riz (so named at the shelter for how he resembles a grain of rice when curled up for a nap!)

Your story makes me cry, even though I know your happy, I wish you more happiness in the rest of your life ahead. Also Madden I know how it feels to be treated differently because of what you look like. I have a condition called vitiligo which means I have dark spots ofver my white skin it kinda looks like I got splattered with paint just not pink or purple.

Three time Cy Young Award winner, Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer has mismatched eyes. Not only is he a great pitcher, he can hit one out of the park.
