8 Spooky Facts About Black Cats October 04 2017, 90 Comments
There are few cats that are as iconic as the black cat. Especially when Halloween rolls around. What would our Halloween decorations be without a yowling black cat with its back arched and fur standing on end? And what would our Halloween costumes be like without at least one girl gettin' spooky with it as an iconic Black Cat?
While there are tons of superstitions swirling around the much maligned - and also much beloved - black cat, there are just as many interesting facts that make them unique.
1. Black cats’ bad rep stems from the Middle Ages.
Pope Gregory IX decided that black cats were used to worship the devil and saw them as evil creatures. The belief only continued to spread across the world - and the ages. Thanks, Greg.
2. Black cats were often thought to be witches’ familiars.
The Puritans (circa 1600s) believed that witches could actually shape-shift into black cats and spy on their neighbors.
3. Black cats were thought to be a sailor's best friend.
Sailors and their wives saw black cats as guardians of safe passage. These inky felines were seen as harbingers of such good fortune that they became a hot commodity, and some sailors couldn’t even afford to buy them.
4. In Ireland, Cait Sidhe, pronounced “caught shee,” were mythical, fairy-like creatures who took the form of large, all-black cats were said to be the King of the Cats.
On the night of Samhain (a Celtic festival similar to Halloween), if you left a saucer of milk out for the fairy cat, your house would be blessed. If no milk was left for the mysterious black cat, you would be cursed and all your cows' milk would dry up.
5. They are said to be "super cats."
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health discovered that the genetic mutations that cause cats to have black coats may offer them some protection from diseases.
6. They can rust.
All right, so your black cat won't actually rust if you leave them out in the rain. They will complain VERY loudly, though. But if your black cat has a tabby stripe gene and spends hours napping in a sunbeam, their fur can turn a rusty brown color. Why? The sun’s rays break down the pigment in their fur to reveal the underlying tabby stripes.
7. Black cats make excellent wingmen.
In Japan, young women are encouraged to own black felines to increase their chance of romance. And in the English Midlands, giving a bride the gift of a black cat was thought to bring her good luck.
8. Black cats are often overlooked for adoption.
Black cats are often the last to get adopted and may be passed over for cats of other colors despite the fact that they're just cats like any other cat. It could be because of the superstitions surrounding their inky fur or the belief that black cats are harder to photograph.

We have a black kitty named Snuggles. She’s a sweetie—and the only thing “unlucky” about her is for her, when she blends into a black chair or the laundry basket in which she’s curled up! Can’t tell you how many times I’ve reached for my black socks—only to have the “socks” give an indignant, “MIEUW!”

I’m laying here on my couch writing this being watched by my little black cat named Bastet. She’s a real sweetie, about 2 years old and a shelter cat. Bastet makes some wonderful sounds, snarls, growls and hisses like a little panther but she is really sweet and educated and dosen’t scratch nor bite..Utterly adorable, I’m glad I adopted her..

I’m on my second black cat. I’ve always liked the sleek and glossy look of a black cat’s coat. It’s also been my experience that they have mellow and laid-back personalities.
My first black cat was Bagheera, as in the panther from “The Jungle Book.” He weighed 17 pounds and was the biggest cat I’ve ever had.
My current black cat is named Shelby, and I got her from the Humane Society when she was not quite two. The poor thing had been there for nearly a year because nobody wanted a black cat.
I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I’ve read that the movie “Black Panther” caused a spike in black cat adoptions and that a lot of people named their cats after cats in the movie.

We rescued our black cat Sonny from our sister’s house in the dead of winter. The vet said he was one of the catch and release kitties, ear tipped, freshly neutered and full of vermin from whatever he was scrounging to eat. Sis has 6 cats of her own and although she fed him could not keep him. We had lost 2 dogs a few months back and didn’t want another animal to fuss then grieve over. When she called to “just see him” I couldn’t resist.
My husband met us at the vet and one look, one rub against him, I knew we were taking him home.
Sonny had a clean bill of health and has totally taken over our house. The cat that scrounged for whatever was out there now eats only top of the line cat food, has his nails trimmed professionally and greets us daily as if he can’t get enough of being with us. He’s also the official greeter when anyone comes to visit.
In our old age, Sonny has given us so much in return for making him our own. SP

I have 4 black cats, all females, out of our 7 and I adore them! They are so loving and very clever.
They are all special and each one of them has their own personality, likes and dislikes etc. When people come over and see the black ones, they quite often comment on the myths they carry. To us, we all love them, no matter their colour.

I have never been with out a black cat for the last 40 years of my life. BC (Black Christmas), Kizzy, CC (Carbon Copy), JB (Jet Black), Jewel, Pearl, and my current baby Magick. My black cats have always been a very important part of my life. They have given me love, companionship, friendship, protection and soft place to shed a tear or two.

I have 10 black cats all rescued from being killed. I will take any black cat (or any other color) into my Home. As of right now I have 35 Fur children. They have Run of my house inside and out. No Cat left alone is my motto! My babies get along as if they are human and yes they fight, love, care and clean each other just as a family! People look down on me for having so many but I honestly believe that if someone can have 20 kids to feed, bathe, House and put clothes on them…then I can have my Babies too!!!

Back in 1980 we had two black cats. One we called Merlin because he had a little white beard. He was a very well behaved cat till we got him a little black kitten for company. Quite an eccentric little creature so we named him Maverick. Both very adorable in their own ways. Then Top Gun came out in 1986 and ruined it all. I still miss them to this day.

It took me 13 years to get my first black cat, a sweet shorthaired male I named Canth Starshadow who like to drape himself upside down on my lap while I wrote stories and articles. We became such good friends I promised myself never to be without a black cat again. My next black was longhaired Tabirika Black Onyx, followed by Syrannis Moonstone (who turned out to be a rare Chantilly-Tiffany). Both of those ladies came from animal shelters, and they lived to the excellent ages of 19 and 18 years respectively. Both died within a few days of each other three years ago while I was on a trip out of the country. I now have a beautiful longhair Talisharr Starshadow (also adopted) who has a delicate voice and silver hairs in her ears. I’m doing well with black cats!

I love all cats! I have had a tabby who lived to 22 and a tuxedo who lived to 16 but got a cancer on his cute white nose. I miss them both terribly. I would happily home a black cat, bigger the better. :)

My first black cat was Henry! and he was the love of my life! I have always had cats and loved them but they were always very calm and well behaved and then I fostered Henry and had to keep him and it turns out he was a HUGE trouble maker!! But he made my house so much more fun! Unfortunately, despite what this list says about them being very healthy cats, Henry died at 3 of asthma. I was devastated as all my other cats had died of old age. I now have another black cat named Simon who is also just terrible but has brought fun back into my house! I feel that I will always have a black cat in my life and don’t understand why they would be the last to be adopted! My 2 boys have only made my life better! Big black cat lover!

I’ve had several black cats in my life time. Four to be exact. Only one was totally black. The others had white spots on their tummy and neck. My little Gizmo I have now has three spots…her neck, her chest, and her tummy. I love black cats. I don’t believe in superstitions, and black cats are no more bad luck than any other cat. In fact, I believe they bring good luck

I’ve had two black cat’s. I love the sleekness of them. We had a male named Tommy who adopted us. He was the best cat I’ve ever had. We called him our cat-dog lol. He passed away two years ago. Then we got another black cat but a female. She was the wildest thing ever. Now that she’s 3 she has calmed down and is acting like a normal cat lol. They are the most beautiful I think .

There is no cat like a black cat! The silky, shining, loving creature in the room is the black cat. He/she is regal and smart. Loving and snuggly. I’ve loved all of my black cats, one even liked to “tell me stories” when I got home from work…..one learned to fetch, and the one I have now was raised in a men’s shelter for the first year of his life, as a kitten they didn’t want to get up all night to feed him, so they taught him to drink from a hamster bottle! He’s so smart, that’s my boy, Einstein, now 12 years old! I’d love to get him those bat wings, but he wouldn’t have it, unless they were knitted in catnip!

I grew up with black cats and now have two of my own. Sasha is an 8 year old Bombay patent leather like shine, my personal 17lb panther. Salem is my new guy, a scruffy, rusty black, Norwegian Forest Cat. Both have very distinct personalities. I couldn’t imagine life without them.

I LOVE black cats. I’ve always wanted one. Life brought me my cat of 20 years, Dweeb, who was a brown tabby. When she passed I decided to foster and ended up being given a tuxedo kitten. I failed as a foster mother, and Misha has been with me for four years now. I call him my sometimes-black cat. When he sits in a certain way all his white is hidden. He has an all black face, which I love. I almost got a black cat. I love my boo boy. :o)

I have three black cats and love them all! They each have a unique personality that makes them so much fun. Black cats are the only kind I adopt, one because they are my absolute favorite, two because I think they are beautiful, and three because they are the least adopted. They are just like any other cat, and everyone should love them equally :) great article!

I wish all you people lived by me. There are eight apartments in my building and only one person has a pet — and she has a dog! But that’s ok, I like dogs too. In my old neighborhood, there was this one family that just hated cats. Unbelievable. At the time, we had four. Unfortunately I can’t afford any pets right now because I don’t have a job. Wish it would change soon because I love having cats around. I’d go to the animal shelter and specifically adopt a black cat. I think they’re beautiful.
Teresas on October 07 2017 at 01:17PM
God has blessed us with 4 most precious cats, w of them are now in Heaven, all of them are solid black. They are so lovable, funny and each with their own personality. We love all cats, but when we go to adopt a new blessing, we are always drawn to the black cats. Such silly superstitions, such silly people that believe them!

All my life I’ve had one cat at a time.. I now have 8 ( all indoor ) and couldn’t feel more loved..1 solid black ( Charleigh ), 2 tuxedos ( Neko, Majik) and one tortoise I brought back home to Louisiana from Tennessee ( Zoe, a really spoiled rotten fur baby )..I think owning a black cat/cats, means luck ( so I’ve heard, lol )..to my understanding, I believe it cause I feel so very lucky to have them in my life ( all of them )..I even go across my home town to feed 4 feral strays ( 2 of them are black, lol )..couldn’t imagine someone’s life without at least one black cat out the bunch, lol..I love my fur babies with all my heart ????

If you want to photograph a black cat. Download this filter I discovered in the App Store: Analog Paris by ordinaryfactory inc. Filter 01 is the best even for low lights. I think you have to buy it for like $3 (i forgot the exact price) but its really worth it. my black cat looks like any other colored cat when i use this filter on her photos, u can see the details in her face & fur. I use it for all of my iphone photos too. I hope im not violating anything here for sharing some product that might help photographing black cats.

Hi…first, I love black cats. (Who doesn’t?)
BUT your headline is bad, bad, bad—chiefly because:
1) The headline has nothing to do with the content of the article. I’m sure that you gave it this title because of black cats/Halloween thing. But the headline could leave people who aren’t very bright to think that there ARE “spooky” things about black cats. And that is:
2) BAD for black cats, because some stupid people today still DO think that they’re “bad luck.” Which is ridiculous. But worse,
3) Some of those stupid people kill or otherwise harm black cats, because they believe social media nonsense, about black cats being “bad luck,” or “evil.”
You’re a pro-cat company: you shouldn’t contribute to the prejudice—and endangerment—of black cats just because someone didn’t THINK, and wrote a headline that indicates that there’s something supernaturally evil about black cats. Please change this headline, it could cost black cats their lives. :( (I’m telling you this, as both a professional editor and writer.)
4) A fun fact that you should have included: there’s no such thing as a black cat on Earth, who’s ALL black. Every black cat on this planet has at least ONE white hair—that is because, during the aforementioned Middle Ages—people bred black cats with cats of other colors, mostly with a large amount of white, to try to breed the “evil” out of them. Go ahead, try to find a black cat who doesn’t have ONE white hair on her/his body. You can’t do it. :) (And this, I tell you, as someone who studied Medieval history and theology in undergrad and grad schools. I learned this from some of the world’s greatest Medievalists.) :)

Ive always been the type to go for the underdog. I don’t know if it’s the reason I adopted a black cat… When I did it felt more like an impulsive decision, I had been looking at kittens to adopt, not knowing which breed I’d like more. I saw this random ad from a woman who had 3 kittens to give or they were gonna go to a pet shop… I felt drawn to adopt the little black male of the bunch. It all felt random at the time but let me tell you now I know it was destiny. I never encountered a cat like my Meeko. He is the most loving, funny and friendly cat Ive ever met. He’s strong and very massive for his age (not fat) and he matches my personality in a way I didn’t think was possible from encounters with other cats in my life. I’m so glad I never hesitated about his fur color. He’s my baby boy for life and brings me enormous comfort whenever things are hard. He is hard to photograph though! His black coat makes him even more special :)

I had an all black cat called Wellington, & he was the most handsome cat I’ve ever had,. Also, he was very king like &, after he went to,the rainbow bridge I decided to not have an all black cat because they’d never match up to him.

I actually placed a black cat in my story “The Spirit of Cassious House” for Alyssia to have and she named her Mystery because she came from nowhere. I thought that the little black kitten would keep Alyssia company after losing her family and struggling to to come to terms with being alone in the world. That is why I love black cats.. They also protect you and I would love to have a black cat one day

Cait Sidhe literally just means cat Fairy. It’s not Fairy-like. Sidhe is fairy. That’s what the word means. Banshee in it’s original Gaelic is Bean sidhe. (woman fairy). People, stop saying Sihei are fairy-like because they aren’t pixies. Sidhe is proper, folkloric faery. That’s what the word means.

I have a tortie and a black cat. The black one LOVES TO PLAY FETCH. And he loves to cuddle. Like my tortie and my dog, he is a rescue and has improved my life. Rescue pets are the best pets.

I have a black cat and a tuxedo. Not my first black one either. I love ALL cats. And I have had cats ALL my life. Even as a baby my parents never worried about al the superstitions . They steal the babies breath (HA). The kitty litter scare that is out there now was never an issue either. I grew up just fine. And that was back in the day before the fantastic clumping litter, or even using gloves. Cats are great! Also better at alerting you if someone is lurking around, as they don’t make the noise that dogs do. While a dog will scare a prowler away…a vat will be subtle and let you know there’s something about and then you can get the upper hand.
I love my dogs too! And They ALL get along together! One big happy family!
