As cute as black cats are, unfortunately, there is still a prevalent belief in the United States and some European countries that they are omens of misfortune; If a black cat crosses your path, you’re in for bad luck that day. I don't know about you, but if I saw a face this precious, it'd only make my day better!
Black cats’ bad rep stems from the Middle Ages, when Pope Gregory IX decided that black cats were used to worship the devil and saw them as evil creatures.
The vilification of black cats began to grow, spreading to countries like England and eventually to America, as the Puritans settled in New England. During the infamous Salem Witch Trials in the late 1600s, black cats were thought to be witches’ familiars. The Puritans believed that witches could actually shape-shift into black cats!
Believe it or not, though, black cats are actually surrounded by myths of prosperity, luck and even love.

I’ve had many black cats over the years. Currently I have only one solid black kitty. His name is Wookie and he’s the light of my life. When he’s feeling playful, he actually runs up the wall as he rounds the corner!
I have a black rescue kitty that is beautiful and very loving. She also loves my 16 year old dog. She’s jealous for the attention but wants to clean him daily! I love black cats! I would not trade her in for anything. I do have one problem with her. She potties outside her litter box even though I keep her box cleaned every night. I keep the puppy training pads in front of her box and in a couple of days the puppy pads are soaked. :( I called my vet and she didn’t have any solutions. She said to try using 2 litter boxes but I don’t want to have the money and time for two boxes for 1 cat. She also said some cats stay in that habit once they start it. I have shampooed the rug and even tried using vinegar on the spot. I have even used the spray for animal smell. She does not have any infections. If anyone has any suggestion, I would love to hear them!
Great facts and a good read! After about 60 years of owning cats (or is it cats owning me…?), last year I got my 1st black cat, a female named Miss Daisy, who was found by a friend of a friend of mine in the middle of an intersection lying on her back approximately 3-4 weeks old. She was scooped up by my friend’s friend as she stopped her car right next to her and reached down then driving off. One lucky kitty I’d say!!! Since adopting her, I call her the “the black jewel of the Nile”!!
My girlfriend has even taught her how to “pattycake, pattycake” as when cornered by one of my other 11 cats, she screeches like she was being skinned alive!!! I wouldn’t trade here for anything in the world either!
I have 2 black cats now. They are so friendly to each other and me. Every day they cheer me up, from the time I get up, until the time I go to bed. I wouldn’t trade them for anything in the world.
